A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
