Around 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
An important representative commented the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
