In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
