Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
